Tough child of a tough father:

she hasn’t learned how to be cautious.

KREON

The toughest iron yields

and loses its stubbornness, tempered

in the ovens. It happens every day.

But this one here enjoys

making fun of the laws of the land.

And to top this impertinence, now that

she’s done it, she laughs about it and boasts

that she’s done it. I hate that: when somebody’s

caught in a crime and tries to make it look pretty.

And yet, though she insults me in spite of our family

ties,

I’ll be slow to condemn her because of our family ties.

Therefore I ask you: since you did it in secret

and now it’s out in the open, wouldn’t you say,

to avoid severe punishment, that you’re sorry you did

it?
